Stuck with old software? How to upgrade your XP Embedded Thin Clients with NoTouch Desktop

You are still using Windows XP Embedded thin client devices but their local web browser, Citrix Receiver or VMware View protocols are out of date? You would like to use newer software solutions but they require an update and you do not get any software updates from your thin client vendor anymore? You never had decent central management software for your XP Embedded thin clients?

If a company decides to go with thin client hardware it happens with the intention of using the hardware longer than standard PC hardware. Without fans, no hard disks and no moving parts thin client hardware is usually durable and powerful enough to run thin client operations for five years and longer. But what if your software is out of date after a couple of years, the update of the (embedded) image not possible or too expensive and the client management is still complicated?

Stratodesk has the solution: Easy and fast Windows XP Embedded thin client update to a fully featured, state of the art NoTouch Desktop thin client/VDI/Cloud terminal in three simple steps.

NoTouch Desktop is a complete hardware and vendor agnostic thin OS for any x86 thin client (and some ARM), any VDI solution (Citrix, VMware, Quest,..), and any cloud environment (e.g. Desktone or simply Google Apps). In addition to that, NoTouch Desktops includes an intelligent, easy to deploy and easy to use thin client management suite, that was specifically developed and designed to fit client administrators’ needs. No matter how many devices you have – here is how to start:

  • Download NoTouch Desktop and evaluate for free

Go to www.stratodesk.com/download and register to get a complete version of NoTouch Receiver OS and NoTouch Center Management for up to five desktops for free.

  • Install or live boot NoTouch Desktop

You may want to try NoTouch Receiver OS, the repurposing part, in a virtual machine first. Download free VMware Player and have a glance at the look and feel of NoTouch in an instant.
If you want to use NoTouch Desktop on your hardware you have multiple possibilities to do so.

a) Boot from USB/CD
Create a bootable USB pen drive as described in our knowledge base www.stratodesk.com/kb out of the image you downloaded from our website or burn the ISO on CD.
You may now choose now between
– booting live from USB/CD or
– installing NoTouch Desktop on your existing hardware.

b) PXE boot
The most usable option if you have more than one or two thin clients to renew is to set your PXE server and to deploy or boot NoTouch Desktop via PXE over the LAN. Again both options are possible:
– live boot and
– installation.
More information on this can again be found in our knowledge base www.stratodesk.com/kb.

  • Use first time wizard to do basic settings and establish your first connection to a terminal server, VDI or cloud environment.

NoTouch Desktop includes all major protocols and connection brokers e.g. Citrix Receiver, VMware View, Quest vWorkspace, Desktone and many more. Take a look at our data sheet to learn more.

Et voila’ – your old thin clients are “brand new” NoTouch thin client devices ready to use with newest technologies, updateable and centralized manageable.

Worried your old thin clients will not meet the hardware requirements of NoTouch Desktop? NoTouch Client is only app. 200 MB small and has minimal hardware requirements. It will fit on all thin clients, ever meant to use with Windows XP Embedded. But Stratodesk also offers images as small as 32 MB, if you would like to use less powerful hardware.

Do you also have older PC that still function fine? If you do so, why not repurpose them as well and use them as thin client terminals? Manage all your NoTouch thin clients and repurposed PCs with NoTouch Center.

Talk to us ([email protected]) and we will provide software images that will fit your hardware in size and features.

Last but not least: Let’s talk about management!

For one thin client it’s fine to customize and configure it with the local management but as soon as you have a couple of clients you definitely want to have a centralized management solution. Install NoTouch Center on a server and deploy, configure, customize, update, and monitor your network remotely.

You are not sure, if your thin clients can be upgraded? We have successfully upgraded thousands of thin client devices including popular models of HP, Wyse, Dell, IGEL, VXL and many more. Talk to our support team and write to  [email protected] . We are happy to help and discuss your requirements and needs.
